Back in the day when I would get a stack of catalogs in the mail everyday I would look at them with scissors in hand. As I would find an inspirational picture or a project that I knew I could DIY it would be cut out of the catalog and taped into the "binder." So now there are brilliant people who understand that most of us have switched over to the internet for our inspiration--but how do you organize it all?

Quiet Book-Prep Work

Before we can start on the fun pages we need to get all the blank pages ready. Find some good light, plain colored cotton. Either muslin or white cotton will work well. I used an old white fitted sheet for my books. Because it was an old sheet it had been prewashed- I don't plan on washing the quiet books, but prewash your fabric just in case.
Cut 10 rectangles out of the sheet or fabric, each rectangle measuring 10x24 inches.

Buy materials you will need:

Felt in all different colors. If you have your book planned out before hand go through each page and think of what colors you will need. I have already gone back several times for different colors of felt.

Buy a bottle or two of Fray Check or something similar. I put it at the end of each stitching line to help make it stronger. I am expecting this book to get a lot of use-I don't want my stitches to come out.
At the beginning of each post for the pages I will list materials you will need for the page.

Now on to the PLAN:

Find 20 pages that you will want to make. Write these down or bookmark them or pin them. Just be able to find them when you can't remember exactly what you want it to look like. Now make two charts:

This is how you want your book to be as the end product. Notice that page 1 & 20 are single pages. When planning out your pages plan for some that will take a full spread (two consecutive pages like 10 & 11)

This is how you will construct your book. This plan is the more important to keep with you at all times while working on the quiet book. I kept this plan on my ironing board to make sure I was placing the objects on the right side of the page.
I will be referring to this chart throughout the process to help with the construction. If it doesn't make sense now it will make more sense when I show you how to sew it all together.
Tomorrow will be page 1 both boy and girl version. I hope you're as excited as I am to start this project!

Quiet Book-a look back and an announcement

One of my projects on my list has always been a quiet book. I loved the one my mom had for us, and I was always jealous that my sister got to make one in 4-H. I finally got it together and have decided to make two quiet books-a boy version and a girl version. For the month of February I will be posting every weekday and sharing how and what I did for each page.

The books each have 20 pages, some of the pages will have the same things on them-but just different versions (for a boy and a girl.) My plan is to post the versions separately-so it will be easier to find them later.

To get you excited I wanted to show you the quiet book that we got to play with when we were little. I think my mom played with it when she was little too.

Growth Chart Ruler

When my hubby and I were looking at homes a few years back I remember walking into a home and felt like I was walking into a pottery barn catalog. Everything was coordinated and organized in cute baskets and bins. It was fun to look at but probably the reason they were staring at foreclosing. When I saw the growth chart ruler at pottery barn I knew that I could never afford it and that I could make it. So I did clipped it from a catalog and put it in my dream binder--you know the things you did before pinterest.

My father-in-law always says it is easier to make more of one project at the same time. Processes turn into assembly lines and when you make a mess you usually only have to clean it up once. So I convinced the hubby once again to help me with this project. It ended up being a Christmas present for one of his brothers. I did a few things differently than others in blogdom.

First I started my 1 foot mark as the first mark-so this mark is 2 inches long. The smaller marks are 1 inch long. My hubby is 6'5" and I am 5'10" we have tall kids, and I didn't want to run out of room at the top.

This growth chart goes to 6'11"--if my kids go past that then they are going to be giants. I had the hubs stain it, and I painted the lines and the numbers by hand. The lines aren't perfectly straight-but you don't notice until you are really close. I also flipped the numbers so they are not horizontal, this was just a personal preference. We used a pine board, I think it cost around $6. If I remember correctly, my hubby used a mixture of 1/2 mineral spirits and 1/2 polyurethane to put on as a finish. I used a permanent marker to mark the date and name of the child's height.

Did you notice that my posts were a little lacking in October and November? I guess I brought it on myself really, how you ask? Well, over the last year I have noticed so many people have been having baby's and their blog seems to just drop off for a few months and then comes back after their first trimester. The only two that completely pulled it off were Katy from No Big Dill and Dana from MADE.

So if you haven't figured it out yet I am pregnant and completely dropped off the planet during October and November. I wasn't expecting to, but like I said I brought in on myself. I would read the blogs of those who were expecting and apologizing for not having energy or the gumption to sit up and craft or sew or even type and I would think to myself--really people just get up and do something. Silly me--why would I think that?

I thought this pregnancy would be a little more like my last one--not much morning sickness just an overwhelming desire to eat. Nope, no such luck this time. Pretty much from the moment of conception my body was nauseous. No cravings, just complete aversion to food, no energy and lots to do. So blogging kind of got pushed to the back burner, and I became a cliche.

On Tuesday we found out what we are having. We are so excited and are expecting our pink bundle of joy in June. So to all of you with morning sickness and no energy to do much send me and email and I would love to do a guest post for you.

And here's a picture of me at 19 weeks...

It's hard to believe there is a baby in there sometimes, especially when I barely have a bump. I guess having a really long torso has some perks.

Burritoful

My hubby loves Chipotle--I mean whenever we are near one we stop for our fix. The only problem is that there is not one near us. We have to either drive 8 hours south or over a state line to fine one. For my hubby's birthday I searched the internet for chiptole recipes and came up with a few. I surprised him with a full chipotle meal. I did forget the beans--but nobody seemed to notice. I contacted Chipotle looking for a t-shirt, they always have the funniest shirts....but my luck would be that they are changing venders so don't offer shirts at the moment. So I had to be creative and make my own....

Enter the burritio

Put it on a white shirt and viola!

After all the guests left the party my hubby reminded me that the shirt actually should say "Life is Burritoful" So the next day I added "Life Is."

So the shirt looks like this now...

Ready for 2012

Now that the end of January is around the corner and Superbowl frenzy is starting to permeate all the stores I thought I would share what I am doing to keep my papers organized this year.
Normally I stack all my bills, EOB's, car repair statements, bank statements and any other paper that I think needs to be filled. I stack all of these papers in my office and eventually the stack gets several inches high and just looking the stack, knowing that I need to file it makes it seem too overwhelming. So this year I have taken a different approach.
I saw this idea on pinterest, and I didn't pin it--and now I can't find the source.

I have folders for Utilities, Medical, Dental, Paystubs, School, Each member of the family, Car (anything-insurance or repairs) and Misc. Each member of the family has their first initial on it (we don't have any repeating letters in our family)
So far it has kept the counter completely free. And I showed my hubby the system and he even put papers away without it touching the counter.
I have been searching blogdom for some organizational helps and found one person did a similar concept, but she bought a filing system that comes with a lid. At the end of the year she writes the year on the outside of the box and puts the lid on and the filing is done. My plan, if I like this system, is to buy those boxes for next year and file this years and begin next years in the better box. Does that make sense?

The other thing that we have found that really helps is that the paper shredder is just to the right of this box. So when we get junk mail or papers that need to be shredded they are shredded and not added to the stack of papers.
So now I can say I am ready for the year.

Drizzle Numbers

Do you blog-stalk anybody? Well I do, Delia from Delia Creates always has great ideas and beautiful pictures. A little while ago she posted about making chocolate drizzles to spruce up any dessert. So for my hubby's birthday last week I decided to use her tips and make something for the top of his cake.

Delia said in her post if you are going to make numbers of letters to make sure they are thicker. So this is what I did.

On parchment paper I drew out a 3 & 5. I made block letters with the melted chocolate. Oh yes, and I melted my chocolate IN the ziploc bag, 30 seconds at a time in the microwave so it didn't get too hot.

I put the numbers in the fridge and let them set. Then I pulled them out, flipped them over and put a second coat of chocolate so they were extra thick. Right before serving the cake I put the numbers in the cake.

Just don't put the candles too close to the numbers-the five melted in half during the birthday song.

Paper Straw Wreath

Happy New Year! We are excited for new things happening around here, and are always amazed at how quickly time seems to go. To welcome in the new year I made a new wreath for our front door. My mom, once again, sent me all the supplies and instructions.

Here's a little hint.

You can find the instructions in this magazine, or online here.

The instructions are very easy to follow, and this project should take you no more than 30-45 minutes.

I didn't have the gumption to go to a store this soon after Christmas, so I made my own 6" flat wreath form. You know those compasses we used in Geometry class years ago-get that out and set it to 3" and you have your outside ring. Move it to 2.25" and you have the inside ring. I'm sure most of you have some leftover boxes right now.

Next I traced the form on white paper and made a cover for the form.

Then I glued the cover on.

You will need a box of paper straws-you will not be using the entire box.

Add the first row of straws. Think of the minute marks on a clock as you are placing the straws. Keep the inside edge of the straw flush with the edge of the wreath form.

Add row two.

I didn't like the look of just three rows so I used the cut-off pieces to add a forth row. I alternated shorter and longer until the gaps were fill in.

It isn't as big as you think it will be, but adds a nice burst of color to the door.

I like the look of all the rows of straws. I might have to get some blue and white straws for football season.

Mullet

To go along with the "Mustache" shirt I made a Mullet shirt for my brother. If they wear the shirts together I think it would be pretty funny. They have the personalities to be able to wear these kind of shirts.

Print off this great thing on my laser printer--remember to reverse the text.

Citrasolv-this is my new favorite medium. Fun and easy to use. The guy at the art store who was ringing me up was telling me how concentrated it was and that I should be careful when I was cleaning with it---I explained what I was doing with it and he just stared at me like I was crazy :o) After rubbing the Citrasolv on and using a flat edge to help the transfer the shirt was complete...

Mustache

This was a Christmas present that I gave to my sister-in-law--that's why I'm waiting until now to show it to you :o)

First I printed off the design on Word

Using my super high-tech exacto knife I cut out each letter and the stache. I did not cut out the dots above the i's--I just used the eraser from a pencil to get a perfect circle.

Then I painted with black velveteen fabric paint.

Cousin's Christmas Party

My hubby's family has had a little growth spurt in the last few years. There are a lot of cousins all around the same ages. It makes family gatherings so fun because it is just a huge playdate for the little guys. This year I wanted to have a little party for the cousin's.

First we handed out invites at Thanksgiving. The kids were excited to get the invitations.
A few days before the party I made some Applesauce-Cinnamon ornaments

The recipe called for 1 C cinnamon & 1/4 C applesauce and 1/4 Craft Glue. I followed the recipe and found it to be too dry--I kept adding applesauce and glue until it felt right and wasn't too sticky.

I cut out girls and boys. Use a straw to poke a hole for ribbon while you are cutting out the dough. I kept the cutouts on paper towels. Make sure to rotate every 6-8 hours to help the drying time go faster. Saturday morning before the party I threw a few of them in a 200 degree oven for about 10 minutes just to make sure they were dry.
The day of the party all eleven children attended--yep, ages 6 and under. It was so fun. At one point my neighbors came to drop off a treat and rang the doorbell twice and pounded on the door. My hubby even called downstairs to tell us that someone was at the door--we didn't even hear it. We were able to get all 11 kids sitting on a couch for a fun picture. To keep one of the kids on the couch I pulled out a dum-dum sucker and it worked magic-except all the other kids wanted one too. So we have a picture of the kids sucking on a sucker, but they sat on the couch quietly and contently for a good five minutes worth of pictures.
After lunch and pictures the kids got to decorate their own ornament.

I wrote the child's name and 2011 on the back before they started decorating. The above ornament turned into a finger painting session soon after I took this picture.

Everyone had a blast making their ornament.

This was my little girls ornament, she said the gold at the top was curly hair.

This was the ornament I made the day before so everyone could get an idea of what to do.
After the ornaments we let the kids play while we cleaned up. Then we moved on to a gift exchange. I asked each child to bring a gift worth about $1--I just passed out the gifts and everyone opened all at once. We just couldn't see a "real" white elephant gift exchange working well with toddlers. Everyone got a gift that they loved. After the gifts the kids played some more then we did one more art project.
I made puffy paint and everyone loved getting their hands messy finger painting. They loved how their pictures would come to life in the microwave.
All the mom's were great and helped clean the house back up and it was spotless when all the kids left.
That night we had the missionaries over for dinner, while dinner was finishing cooking I gave them each an ornament to decorate.

These are some pretty cool looking gingerbread-missionaries.

5 Minute Infinity Scarf

As I was getting ready for church the other Sunday I was trying to pull together an outfit. Do you ever have those mornings where you take out half of your closet trying to find the outfit that you will feel cute in? Well it was turning out to be one of those mornings. So I ended up pulling on a grey knit skirt and a long sleeve tee. I have issues wearing a t-shirt to church, it just doesn't feel dressy enough to me. I then went to my sewing room and found some winter-ish looking fabric, a red swiss dot with silver stripes woven into it. The scarf took minutes to sew and I think dressed up the long-sleeve tee enough to wear to church.

Since it was so easy to sew I thought I would give you a tutorial on how I did it.

The Twister Shirt

We had a Christmas party to attend and I didn't like the clothes in my closet. I went to several different stores and found some shirts I liked, but didn't want to fork out the dough. So I did the next best thing...free pattern and went through the fabric stash.

I found the pattern for the shirt on Burda Style here. There are no instructions on how to sew it together, but it wasn't too hard to figure out.

I used a polyester knit, nice and silky. All in all it was a comfortable easy to sew shirt. If I use this pattern again I would add 2 inches to the length and a little to the arms.

Christmas Card 2011

I saw this idea in a catalog from a print company and used it for our family Christmas card. It might be a new tradition for our family.

The family and friends that have received it have loved it. It's a Christmas card/newsletter all wrapped up into one. No picture with a separate newsletter to try to keep together.

I think you could make one in Word, I made mine in Photoshop. It is really easy and fun to recap each month in just a few words.
Maybe someday I will show off my kiddos to you, but I like to keep some of my life offline :o)

Amid all the holiday busy times my little girl was invited to a birthday party. We found some Hello Kitty lip gloss to give. We wrapped the present and then made this clip as a present too.

It is a simple flower glued on to an alligator clip.

I just tied a ribbon around the present and instead of tying a bow I clipped this one on.

It even holds a card well.

And of course I had to make one that matched.

Have you ever walked into someone's house and a wonderful smell whiffs past your nose and you immediately feel at home? That's how I feel about the smell of this mixture.

Here's what you'll need:

Cheesecloth

20 Allspice Berries

25 Whole Cloves

10 Cinnamon Sticks (about 3 inches long)

1/2 Cup Brown Sugar

1 Gallon Apple Juice

Pour the apple juice in a big pot, add the brown sugar-stir. Wrap all the spices in the cheese cloth and tie closed. Place the cheesecloth-ed spices in the apple juice and boil for 25-30 minutes. If you like really strong flavored cider keep the spices in for longer. After the 30 minutes remove the spices and turn off the stove. Serve the drink in mugs or insulated cups.

We made wassail/apple cider last night and I had the cheesecloth wrapped spices still in the pan this morning. I added water and turned the stove on. Not only do the spices fill the air with a Christmas-y aroma it adds humidity to the air-something we desperately need this time of year.

So have yourself a cup and warm right up tonight.

Last week for a family activity we made turkeys to decorate around the house.

I cut out the bodies and feathers and let the kids do the gluing (with a little assistance) and they drew the faces on.

I was originally going to make a garland out of the turkeys, but it just didn't work out. We placed them in any spot we could.

Even the shelf above the piano got some extra turkeys.

My three year old was pretty proud of this one.

This one had the most feathers, thanks to my five year old.

This is such a fun project. You could have paper cut out for kids to do while waiting for dinner on Thursday. Wouldn't they be fun place cards too?

White Chocolate Raspberry Bundt Cake

My hubby works at a hospital. There is always seems to be food or a potluck going on in the break room. One day he came home raving about a bundt cake that a co-worker brought in for her birthday. She got it from a bundt cake bakery (you know the one--delicious and very expensive.) He described it to me and I went to work creating it for him.

White Chocolate Raspberry Bundt Cake--this is not for someone who is remotely wanting their waistline to decrease.

Mix

Layer 1

Layer 2

Layer 3

350 degree oven. Put a pan under it to catch any drips.

Bake 55-60 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes.

Flip on to a cake stand or plate.

Tumbler Baby Quilt

While I was in Utah last week he asked me if I could make a quilt for a friend-and most importantly...he gave me permission to go fabric shopping. I didn't need to be told twice, I found a sitter for my kids and my mom and I went shopping. It was so fun to peruse through quilt shops. I found an inspiration quilt for my colors and ended up using a charm pack (a first for me)

I thought about several different approaches to sewing the quilt top. At first I thought of a disappearing 9 patch, but then I saw an apple core quilt and thought of the tumbler quilt my Grandma gave me earlier this year. So instead of cleaning my house yesterday I found this awesome tutorial by Amanda for a charm pack tumbler quilt and stitched up a quilt top...

What do you think? It was simple to put together and I love the color combinations.

I found this fabric (not Moda) by the other fabrics. I liked how it went with the colors of the pack, I cut a few tumblers from this fabric. This will also be the binding for the quilt.

How was your October? Did you have a great Halloween? I've spent the last week watching my sisters kids while she and her husband are in Europe--lucky ducks. It's been an adventure taking care of 5 kids. My October was a super busy month, crazy but fun. My little girl lost her second tooth too. I thought you would find this x-ray interesting. This is the shot from her last visit 6 months ago, you can see the bottom teeth ready to come up. It was an adventure to pull out the tooth, it was really loose. The tooth wouldn't even stand up straight anymore, but it wouldn't come out. We even had floss wrapped around it and she couldn't pull it out--so I just grabbed the floss and pulled it out. It brought back so many memories when I would wiggle her tooth. Now I need to make a tooth pillow. She put the tooth under her pillow and it moved and fell between the bed and the wall so the tooth fairy couldn't get the tooth.

I have a little project to show you next week that I finished while the kids were at school and I had some time to myself. Hope you are excited for the Holidays just around the corner.

Entertainment Center to Classic Kitchen

This was the last project I competed with on Crafting with the Stars-I am a little disappointed that I didn't go further. I'm really not complaining though because my October has been so busy that it was a blessing that I didn't go further in the competition. I will have to share what my other two projects were going to be. But here is the kitchen....

Isn't it cute? It was really fun to work on and gratifying to see the end result.

Every little detail was fun to plan and carry out.

This took a lot of mod-podge just so you know.

The curtains are much cuter in person-but apparently are not very photogenic.

The sink, the knobs actually turn and so does the spout.

Every thing that could be spray painted red was-knobs & hinges. I painted the faucet too.

It's been fun to watch the kids play and have a kitchen that is actually tall enough for my little giants.

Doll House Remodel-Part 4

Roofing

Now that the floors are finished I was able to pick up some shingles and get the roof done. I found some single split shingles at Hobby Lobby back in August. Following the instructions on the packet I marked the shingle lines on the front and back roofs.

Then I plugged in the glue gun and went to work.

Starting at the bottom row I glued about three shingles down at a time. If you do this make sure your 3 and 5 year old are not right next to you trying to help and see what you are doing. Your hand will probably get burned and you will want to curse.

Ta-da! Doesn't it look cuter?

I need 6 or 7 more shingles and there is not a Hobby Lobby within 8 hours of my home-so I just moved on to the next step.

Paint. I mixed these three colors together and even painted a light coat of just brown to give it a little more depth.

The dark paint completely changes the look of the house.

I just painted where the missing shingles go-that way it isn't blatantly obvious that it is missing some.

Roofing is done-now the finish work begins.

Costume #2-Flynn Rider

For the last few months my little guy told me he wanted to be a pirate-a blue pirate. We have been to several fabric stores looking for blue and white striped fabric. As soon as I bought the fabric he started telling me he wanted to be Flynn Rider, oh well at least this was a fun costume to make. I didn't fight much because his older sister's costume was already done-Rapunzel

This is just the basic costume--he also has a satchel and a frying pan (I'll show you those next time)

My favorite part of the costume is the vest. I had this fabric in my stash-it is an old shirt of my hubby's and just happens to be the perfect color.
He also has boots but did NOT want to wear them for this particular moment. I will show you the complete costume next time too.

Dollar Store Halloween Frame

On the top of my piano for Halloween I have pictures of each of the Halloween's that we have had children. This will be our 6th Halloween with kiddos-it makes the holiday so much more fun. The kids like to look at the pictures and remember what they were from each year. It is fun to see how much they have grown from year to year too. Last year the entire family dressed up and I finally printed off the pictures this week (dad and little guy were the Man in the Yellow Hat & Curious George, I was a cat and my little princess was Sleeping Beauty.)
The fun part about having the piano filled with festive frames is that they become decorations for the holiday too.

Here's just a sampling of the top of the piano.

For the newest frame I went to the dollar store.

I got all the supplies but the glue.

I started by gluing a line of eyes to 3 of the sides.

Then I started added eyes to the front of the frame.

Once all the eyes were glued on I let it sit for about 30 minutes so the glue would set.

I cleaned the glass put in the picture and put it on the piano.

Pin-It Up Thursday...Jute Table Runner

I love good deals and using supplies on hand to create something terrific.

This table runner was made from material I had on hand and when I bought it it was a crazy good deal-a win win for me.

Inspiration...

I like the simplicity and neutrality of this table runner. You can add any flower or vase for a pop of color or seasonal decoration. I had lots and lots of upholstery jute (I don't know what it really is called-it is used for the seat in some upholstery, before you put a cushion on)

This project was pretty straight forward and didn't take much time. Once I wove it and pinned in place I stitched around the outside edges to secure.

I don't know if I can iron it, hopefully I can so it will lay a little more flat.

Now to find some fun vases to top it off.

Jack-O-Lantern Garland

Last night for the activity for our Family Home Evening we made paper jack-o-lanterns. My 5 year old drew the faces. I cut them out. My hubs and 3 year old glued the faces on the pumpkins.

It was quite the assembly line and we had a blast creating these fun faces. The kids are so excited to see something they created on display.

We hole punched two holes in towards the top of each pumpkin and used green DMC floss to tie each pumpkin to the next. Each stem is made out of striped paper.

My favorite Jack-O-Lantern is the middle one with a cute little smile.

Once we hung up the garland I pulled out the other Halloween pictures and decorations and our house is feeling much more festive now.

Jammie Monsters

I found this pattern a few weeks ago and stitched up some monsters for my kiddos.

I changed the foot pattern a bit. The pattern is just a big square, I shaped it so it had a leg and a foot. Other than that I followed the pattern.

They monsters haven't been named yet, but this chick has quite the hair style. I used several different shades of DMC floss and wrapped it around an envelope, cut it in half place it on the material and stitched it in place.

Yum! Jammies!

My kiddos are excited to put their jammies away each morning and to open the monster up to find their jammies each night.

Quilt Inspiration

The end of Summer and September around here are so full activities. It begins with an old car show, then a rib cook off and last weekend was the Hot Air Balloon Races, then followed up by the Air Races. Each is so fun to take kids to and enjoy family time.

We decided to go to the balloon races again this year. We might be crazy, we woke up at 3:30 and left our house by 3:45 just so we could see this...

It is awesome to be surrounded by thousands in the dark and have the balloons glow all at the same time.

They have special permission and licenses to be flying in the dark.

As we watched the balloons I couldn't help but think of quilt tops. Wouldn't these be so fun to stitch up? The colors are all brilliant and simple.

After the dawn patrol and the glow show we were blessed with a beautiful sunrise.

Just after sunrise the mass accent begins.

Within minutes balloons are scattered across the sky. I'm saving my pennies so I can stitch up a quilt or two that look just like the balloons. My hubby even suggested sewing a quilt with balloons on it-it would be fun to try it out for sure.

We were back home and ready for a nap by 9. It was a great event and always worth the extra effort at the early hour.

On a different note...

Last Friday we heard a lots of sirens around town and couldn't figure out what was going on. Our hearts dropped when we found out about the deadly crash at the air races. I know several people that were in attendance when the crash happened, they are all safe. One man who is a retired fireman said that it was the worst thing he has ever seen. After an event like that it makes you give your loved ones an extra squeeze. Hope you all are doing well.

Pin-It Up Thursday...Milk Jug Butterflies

My hubby and his dad and brother are avid butterfly and bug collectors. When I saw this butterfly mobile made out of milkjugs I knew it was my next project.

Inspiration...

I didn't have a full range of colored permanent markers-each butterfly is monocromatic.

The hoop is an embroidery hoop covered in silk ribbon.

I used a clear thin thread to tie them to the hoop. It took some practice to balance the butterflies just right. It is amazing how the move in the air. I might just take them off the hoop and hang them from the ceiling so they look like they are flying in the room, but for now it stays like this.

One last look-this didn't take much time, just time collecting enough milk jugs.

Black Apple Dolls and more...

I finally made a black apple doll. When I printed off the pattern it says to enlarge it to 150%, my scanner does either 129% or 200%. Needless to say I enlarged my pattern to 200% and I love the size of the dolls.

I added pigtails and used buttons for the eyes. My little helpers helped me choose the colors and size of the buttons. It doesn't show up much in this picture, but we added blush to the cheeks too. I used a pink marker to draw on the smile and a black marker for the nose.

After making one, it needed a friend. We are going to give the other one to my little girl's BFF.

Every doll needs a dress too. I may or may not have started several other outfits--the design is bothering me, hopefully I will have a pattern to share with you soon.

Don't these two dolls just look helpless? They need someone big and strong to help ward off any villains or bad guys.

September Word Art

There is a coolness in the breeze now-always a sign that autumn is around the corner. Our September is planned to the fullest. Every weekend we have several events lined up for each Saturday. I am in charge of teaching sharing time and writing the annual primary program. It's going to be a busy fast month. In my last post I showed you the Birthday wall art. Now that the birthday is over I wanted to put in something that was a little more fall-ish. I didn't want it for Halloween or Thanksgiving-I have other ideas for that so this is what I came up with.

Did you have a great weekend? We did and loved the beautiful weather. I'm sorry that most of the country has had crazy hot weather-the weather out here has been absolutely perfect. The few days that we reached the high nineties afternoon storms rolled in and cooled it off-so nice. I"m not bragging, just trying to remember how we felt this summer.

Labor day around these parts brings two things.

1. The Rib Cook Off-a good friend of ours said it is his favorite holiday.

2. A Birthday for my baby.

He has been telling us about this birthday for several weeks-it's the first birthday that he understands more of what is going on, especially what presents mean. I'll be showing you some of the presents I made for him, but for now I wanted to show you our new word art that we put up for the birthday. It will be a tradition now to put it up for each birthday.

It's the song we sing instead of the traditional Happy Birthday tune. It's upbeat and doesn't drag on. I tried to find someone singing it online and couldn't-so I made my own recording...

Pin-It Up Thursday...Toy Mat/Bag

When I saw this on Pinterest I knew that it was a project I had to do. Anyone else almost curse when you stepped on the sharpest smallest toy your child has? We just got our first lego set, so we don't have enough to merit sewing a mat-but polly pockets and every little tiny winy thing they come with are all over my house. So something had to be done.

Inspiration...

Using what I had on hand I made mine out of upholstery fabric. You may recognize the fabric from this project.

Here it is all cinched up. I didn't have any elastic cording so I used 10 grommets around the edges and a pink ribbon.

I was surprised how much we could fit into the bag. Even the houses fit. My little girl loved the idea that cleaning up would only take seconds.

I will need to find the elastic cording so I won't have yards of ribbon hanging out when it is cinched up. As soon as I finished it my little boy asked where his blue one was...I guess I will have to make a run to the fabric store.

Reverse Applique

Reverse applique is a technique I have never tried, but have always been interested by it. As with most of my projects I mull them over in my mind before I try to do them--this project has been in my mind for a while. When I was visiting my family a few weeks ago my mom had a basket full of clothes ready for donation. I went through the pile and found a red mock turtle neck-just typing turtle neck makes me feel hot. It was the perfect color of red for my little guy and I whipped this out...

His birthday is in a few days and he is ALL boy-anything super hero, trains, cars, or dirt fascinates him. I thought about wrapping this cape up for his birthday-but couldn't resist to see his reaction now. He loved it and even wanted to wear it to show his sister when we picked her up from school.

He hasn't taken it off today-even to eat lunch, color, or play outside. I cut the back out and kept the collar of the shirt attached and uncut-so he can just slip it on and off. It still worries me that it can choke him-but it only took me 15 minutes to complete- and I think he will take it off when it starts to bother his neck.

When we picked up his older sister from school she asked for one too. We scavenged through my clothing stash and found a shirt to make a girl-superhero cape.

The fun thing about the capes is that it makes them want to run and jump-I love things that motivate movement.

Side Tie Shorts

I found this pattern, at craftpassion.com, a few weeks ago and whipped out a pair for my little girl. I lengthened the shorts (maybe a little too much) they are more capri's now.

Her teacher even commented on them. They aren't too hard to sew and make for a great summer outfit.

Soft Yummy PB Cookies

It has been awhile since I posted a recipe. I made these a few days ago and wanted to share the yummy recipe. I promise these are soft and they stay soft (even if you leave them on the pan for a full day-still soft)

Soft Peanut Butter Cookies

1/2 C Butter

1/2 C Shortening

1 C PB

1 C Sugar

1 C Brown Sugar

2 Eggs

Mix until well blended

2 1/2 C Flour

1 tsp Baking Powder

1 1/2 tsp Baking Soda

1/2 tsp Salt

Mix just until blended

Chill Dough

Preheat oven to 375

Roll into walnut sized balls used flour fork to press dough in criss-crosses or

use an unwrapped kiss to press the cookies down and bake with kiss in middle.

Bake for 10-12 minutes.

Enjoy!

Pink Pillows

My little girl loves her duvet cover. She has made her bad more often and seems to be more careful about what she puts on her bed. Her bedroom is at the top of the stairs and it's the first thing you see when you walk upstairs-it bothered me that it was missing some fun pillows.

It's not much. I didn't want to put too many pillows on there because I'm terrified she will suffocate-I've walked in and seen her face right up against a pillow with not much breathing room. She know they are decorative pillows and shouldn't be on there to sleep with-she watches me take off my pillows every night.

For the small pink flower pillow I made the pleated flowers the same way I did on the duvet cover, with more layers.

This fabric is from Home Fabrics. I found it for $2.50 a yard.

The edge has some striped fabric to give it a little detail.

It wasn't quite complete without a soft animal. After finishing this bed I'm excited to sew the duvet cover for my little guy. I have a fun idea that might have something to do with this project.

Bam! Pow! Whap!

A local fabric store is going out of business. I have only gone twice to the clearing out sale because I know my bank account would suffer seriously. One of the times I went my two year old was pointing out all the fun things around the store. He almost started hyperventilating when he saw the DC comic fabric-Superman & Batman. To my knowledge he has only seen one cartoon batman show at a neighbors house and has never seen a Superman show-but this kid loves his superheroes. So I gave in and purchased some awesome fabric, normally I don't buy characterized fabric-I want my things to be more classic.

I was happy that the batman fabric looked more like the old school batman-not a dark and evil batman.

So in about 15 minutes I whipped these pillow cases out.

It's so easy to sew things for my girl and easier to find super sales for the boy clothes-does anyone else feel like this too?

And made up some shorts (hopefully he will let me wash these at some point)
When I could sew something my little guy would love I was excited.

After he saw the pillowcases he pulled them down to the family movie night and had to make sure it was next to him the entire time.

It sure made going to bed a little more exciting, at least for one night.

Do you think it's like wearing socks with sandals if he wears Spiderman with Superman?

August Wreath

I loved my patriotic wreath, but didn't want to have red white and blue for the rest of the summer.

While my SIL was visiting she helped me fold, staple and cut out different colored paper bursts.

The white wrapped around the wreath is crepe paper-I have a covered porch so I don't need to worry about it getting wet. My favorite part about this project is that I had everything on hand. The summery colors bring a smile to my face every time I come home.

My SIL was here for a few days while her hubby, my brother, attended a sign painting workshop. He has been learning the trade of hand painting signs-an art that most people probably don't know still exists.

O's-hard to get perfect

My brother didn't paint this sign-he earned it by printing some business cards-but it is an impressive sign.

At the workshop he started this sign. Isn't it awesome? His company is called Voila Press. He explained the many processes he did to get just to this point. Gold leafing, sand blasting, acid erosion--all technical stuff. By the way if you need some letterpressing, sign painting and many other things my little brother is very talented and always looking for work. So as a gift for my birthday while at the above mentioned workshop he whipped out this little sign for me...

It's what I say to my children-at least once a day. I'm excited to hang it up, probably in the kitchen.

I love that I can still see the drafting lines-something you don't get with vinyl.

Pin-It Up Thursday=Ruffle Dress

I'd like to start something new here at the Project Corner. First let me explain something, Pinterest seems to be the current buzz word of the blogosphere. I love it because:

1. Eye candy

2. I feel organized

3. Great ideas with included links

It's like starring all your favorite posts in Google reader, but having them organized into folders with an instant visual reminder of what you have in that folder. And when you pin something it usually has the link to the original source-so you can get the tutorial or any other information. My only complaint is that swear words pop up on pins-and I wish I could filter those out.

So on to my "something new." I've seen several Pinterest Challenges and will probably participate in some, but I wanted to start to share projects that I have pinned and redone in my own way. This may be weekly or monthly or bi-monthly-but it will be posted only on Thursdays. So for my first

Inspiration~

My SIL has a dress similar to this, she wore it to church while visiting us last Sunday. I analyzed the dress and Monday afternoon this image popped up on Pinterest. I really wanted to sew this dress in a linen or cotton, but I didn't have any of that on hand and didn't have the funds to get more material. I found some grey waffle knit in my stash and used the Coffee Date dress pattern.

Duvet Cover

This project has been on my project list for a long time. I bought the sheets at Ikea last year. At first I thought of doing a ruffled cover-but it just wasn't going that way when I started to put things together.

My sister-in-law was out for a few days and she helped me put it all together.

I used the excess material from one of the sheets.

Here's what her bed looked like before (I should show you the pile of toys that she puts on her bed every night-it helps her fall asleep to play)

After-I have several pillows that I need to finish up, I'll post those when I complete them.

A close up of one of the flowers. Each of the flowers has a big white button in the middle.

The back of the duvet cover has 5 buttons that match the buttons on the front.

On each corner in the inside I sewed ties.

The comforter has places for the ties-it's what makes it so the comforter doesn't get all bunched up.

Each of the flowers stems is made out of bias tape-just like this dress. I pinned the design down and zig-zagged it.

My SIL and I debated whether or not to put 3 or 5 flowers-we decided on three because it is only a twin size and the flowers that I am planning on putting on a pillow will help balance it out.

One more shot-love how sweet and simple it is.

My Cell Phone Story

Hair's a Donation

After Tangled came out last year did anyone's little girl refuse to get their hair cut? I mean go into hysterics if you mentioned a trim? Well, my little girl was that girl. We could get her do behave well if we mentioned a haircut-it was kind of nice. Something changed this week and she decided she wanted her hair cut-just like mommy's. She hasn't had a good chop for almost 2 1/2 years. And her hair grows fast. While she was at school I researched hair donation and found a place to donate.

The problem with cutting hair short is that it needs to be styled-something I'm not an expert in and I didn't want to fork out lots of money either. Google to the rescue...

Yes, I found an awesome video and blog about cutting hair. This video for cutting a bob is very detailed and gives good tips-at least for me.

It's still a little wet in this shot, but once it dried it has the funnest bounce to it.

My only issue is the straight line across the middle of the hair-this came from cutting it in a ponytail. I'm sure in a month or two when we need to trim it up the line won't be so dramatic.

Sausage Roll Skirt

For my little girl's best friends birthday I made a fun skirt. It is called the sausage roll skirt because of the way it is sewn-similar to a pillowcase.

For this skirt I cut three strips of fabric

Summer Bag Tutorial

This is a fairly quick bag to make and can easily be adapted to different needs.

Orange (outside fabric) Cut 2
17x20 inch rectangles

Blue Paisley (inside fabric) Cut 2
17x24

Straps Cut 2
4x34 or 36 (cut longer if you like longer straps)

Pockets (optional)
6x6 squares--these can be any shape you want and are sewn in the interior of the bag

Summer Bag

This summer I seem to be out and about a lot more than previous summers. My little girl took swimming lessons, we are shopping for school clothes & have had lots of family in town.

With all the outings I wanted a bag that would hold more, look summerish, and needed to be washable.

Behold the summer bag.

Six pockets on the outside. It is tall enough to hold a Kirkland package of baby-wipes and size 6 diapers (If only we could get my little guy potty trained)

Two pockets inside-always essential for mom stuff.

And a magnetic snap closure to keep things inside the bag.

I made one of the outside pockets shorter so my cell phone wasn't too deep, making it easily accessible.

I'll post a tutorial later this week.

Ruffle Fabric Swimsuit

I found some ruffle fabric in the clearance section at JoAnn's a few months ago. My little girl is in swimming lessons and needed another suit.

I made wide straps and made sure that it was high in the front and back. It is so hard to find a swimsuit that fits little girls--hello people they don't need drooping necklines or open backs just to get more sunburned or show things they shouldn't be!

Back to the swimsuit. I found some coordinating swimsuit fabric at Hancock and made some boy-shorts for the swim bottoms. I also lined the ruffle fabric because it is too sheer for this purpose.

She loves having the option of another swimsuit. I'm gearing up to make a full swimsuit. Any suggestions?

Pins to Magnets

I've been going through boxes in my sewing room and found these pins I bought some time ago at Target in the dollar bins.

My kids are starting to love Dr Suess books and recognized most of the the characters on the pins.

Sharp pins and a two year old usually don't mix well.

I had some plain magnets (pulled off other things by above mentioned 2 year old)

5 minutes and 1 glue gun later I pulled off the pin back and attached the magnets.

Cute magnets! The magnets reside on my fridge right now, I'm planning on moving them to a magnetic board at some point in time.

Patriotic Wreath

It took me some time to come up with a wreath for the 4th of July. I love that this wreath took me half an hour and I had all the supplies on hand.

The white wrapped around the wreath is crepe paper. My door is well covered so I don't need to worry about it getting wet.

The paper was fun to fold and cut, it was like magic when I would open it up and staple it together.

After the 4th I am planning on making more paper-bursts (I don't know what they are called), in different colors and making it my summer wreath.
This is an easy way to get a lot of color with out spending much.

A Light Dusting

4th of July Shirt

With the leftover ric-rac from this project I decided to make a coordinating shirt.

I used the bodice piece of the neapolitan dress pattern from Sachiko at the Tea Rose Home. (Can you tell that I really like this pattern right now?)

I had my little girl try the shirt on and realized that it was too long so I flipped up 2 inches and added an elastic to cinch it in to make a drop waist shirt.

Using the leftover ric-rac from the skirt I sewed on the red ric-rac.

Then I sewed on the white ric-rac.

I debated what to do with the blue, but ended up just making a ric-rac flower.

I started on the outside edge of the flower and zig-zagged stitched as I folded and turned until I got to the center.

Another 4th of July outfit complete.

4th of July Skirt

Last year for the 4th of July I made this ruffle dress. This year I wanted something a little more casual. Last month while visiting family in Utah I went to the Fabric Center and bought some large red, white & blue ric-rac.

At Walmart I picked up this tiered skirt

The best part is that it was only $3

I measured out how much ric-rac I would need and finished off the ends. I pinned the ric-rac so that I could sew a straight line and catch the skirt.

The ends aren't perfect, it really doesn't show when it's done.

I made sure to put the white in the middle layer so it would show. To prevent bleeding I washed and dried the red and blue ric-rac before sewing.

Doesn't it look patriotic?

I'm sure you could make one of these skirts out of an old t-shirt too. It's fun and festive.

The Neopolitan Dress

Do you have a blog or blogs that you love to read, anytime they release a new post you stop what you are doing and read every word and gaze at each picture.

Tea Rose Home is one of those blogs for me. She always has great projects and tutorials. I've had the prettiest material in my stash just waiting for the perfect pattern--Sachiko released the Neopolitan Dress pattern and I knew this was the perfect fit.

The white material is a light cotton with yellow embroidered flowers. The sash is a chiffon gingham I found on clearance at Walmart. The yellows of both material match perfectly.

Now that the weather has warmed up this pattern allows for a flowing dress and lots of twirling.

I made this dress and had my two kiddos pose for pictures for their father for father's day. He was surprised and loved the dress too. My little girl wanted to make sure he was really surprised and made sure he didn't see the dress until Father's Day--we even had to curl her hair as a surprise too. I forgot to take a picture of the back--the sash is tied in a square knot because there wasn't enough to tie it into a bow. The knot helps the dress still feel playful. I added length to the sleeve because as mentioned in this post my little girl gets cold all the time.

Hope you can make this dress sometime too, it is simple and fun to make.

Patriotic Mantel

I haven't decorated my mantel since the Spring. I haven't decorated because I haven't really found something that I wanted to do. I've been saving leftover glass jars knowing that someday I wanted to try the milk glass effect-I've seen it on several blogs so it's not an original idea.

I only used three for the mantel, the fourth is going to go in my living room.

Pour the paint in the jar, slowly move it around and downward. This paint is from this project.

The blue is from the kitchen mat up-cycle project. The red is a sample jar from Home Depot. I didn't use white on the jar on the right because I didn't want it to blend in too much with the white mantel and the white flowers.

Following the tutorial by Dana I made some paper napkins. I used three layers instead of two.

Isn't it pretty?

I found a package of huge red Ikea napkins in my stash too.

I found the ants at Coldwater Creek at the beginning of April-I thought they looked summerish.

So there you have my Patriotic Summer Mantel.

My aunt and aunt-in-law have their birthdays on Flag Day. Happy Birthday!
Each of the presents they receive is usually patriotic themed in some way. My mom usually gives her sister something silly (rwb socks, candy, etc) and another well thought out gift. While changing up the decorations in my home I thought of these two aunts and made some fun RWB themed decor. I'm sure this would be a fun birthday present too.

Paper Graduation Caps

My little girl graduated from preschool last night. I wish all graduations could be this simple, a BBQ at our neighbors house with a five minute ceremony to give them certificates. There were six children in our co-op preschool. It was so much fun watching each of them grow throughout the year. I made up some caps for them to wear during the "ceremony."

Cut a square from a cardstock piece of paper. This square is 8.5"

Cut another piece of paper in half.

Staple this piece together. Fold down one long edge about 1 inch.

Cut the folded edge ever .5 to 1 inch.

Circle the band around and staple together. I even stapled the folded edge to help when keeing it glued. I didn't take a picture of the next step, but just put a stripe of glue on the fold and glue to the square.

Repeat until you have enough hats.

I kept on making hats because it was fun to do. Because 4-5 year olds like to play with things I didn't add any tassles on them. You can make a simple pom-pom and attached it with a brad.

We had enough hats for little brothers to wear some too.

Cut-Offs to...Cute Bermuda Shorts

Growing up after a year of school my mom would cut off our jeans and these would be our summer shorts. I'm sure she did it to save money and because it is so hard to find shorts long enough. Who wants to wear super short shorts to a park and burn your legs as you go down the slide? Or stick to a bench because it is too hot and you have bare skin? We found out my oldest will be starting kindergarten next month--in the middle of summer. Looking at her wardrobe I wanted to add some fun summer-school appropriate things.

My neighbor gave us a whole bunch of jeans and pants.

They fit my daughter perfectly, but they won't fit through the winter. These pants are baggy and fit fine, but I wanted to summerize them.

I cut off just above the embroidered part. I cut the left leg first and laid it on top of the right leg to make sure they were even.

The ruffle is 2.5" I didn't connect the ends to make it flare out a little more. To finish off the opening I added a botton.

The belt is also 2.5" wide and double sided. The other side is a solid purple.

The back pocket still has embroidery on it-I think it goes with the pink quite well.

These are the perfect length to help keep the legs cool enough during summer months-and perfectly protected at the playground.

Doubly Chocolate Mint Cookies

It's been a while since I have shared a recipe on this blog, I must say these cookies are divine.

Doubly Chocolate Mint Cookies

1/2 C Butter

1/2 C Shortening

1 1/2 C Sugar

blend, then add...

2 eggs

2 tsp vanilla

mix until fluffy

mix dry ingredients together before adding to wet mixture

2 cups flour

2/3 C cocoa

3/4 tsp salt

The dough is a little tacky. Don't add extra flour until you want dry cookies. Once the flour mixture is mixed until well blended add 1-1 1/2 C Milk chocolate chips and 1 C mint chips.

Bake in a 350 degree oven for 8-10 minutes. Cool and remove from cookie sheet.

Amish Quilt

My grandparents lived in Maryland for almost 20 years. While they lived there they would often drive up to Amish country in Pennsylvania. Besides great bakeries to eat at and beautiful scenery to behold, when you go visit you can't but help to notice the quilts. During one of the visits my Grandma bought an Amish quilt.

When my mom came out to visit me a little while ago she brought out the quilt. My grandma had given it to her, but my mom thought since I like to quilt so much that I would love to have an authentic Amish quilt.

It's not the traditional black fabric with plain colored fabric that I've seen, but it is beautiful. It reminds me of the the styles my Grandma always picks out too.

The hand quilting is perfect. Each stitch is exactly the same length.

The back is just as fun to look at as the front because of the quilting designs.

Last year my mom was in Hershey, Pennsylvania and made it to an Amish quilt shop. There was an Amish lady there purchasing fabric so my mom asked her to pick out fabrics that she would use in a quilt and my mom bought enough to make a quilt--can't wait to see that quilt mom:)

Doll House Remodel-Part 3

Flooring

As I said in the last dollhouse post while the paint was drying I took the kids to Home Depot to get supplies. My original plan was to get Popsicle sticks, stain them brown, cut them in different lengths and add them as the wood floor. While at Home Depot I was looking a the flooring aisles and started looking at the laminate flooring...the word FREE caught my eye next to the word SAMPLE. I grabbed a few samples of the laminate flooring and thought I was content. Then I turned to the next aisle and found the vinyl wood flooring--thinner and for my project it would be much easier to work with. So I put the other samples back and grabbed some of the vinyl samples. Then a sales lady came and asked me how I was doing, I told her I was just dreaming. Someday I would love to have wood floors in my dining room-someday. The sales lady completely understood and told me no less than three times to take as many samples as I needed. I thought to myself- "She said take as many as you need. How many do I need to put in the dollhouse..." So I grabbed more samples.
